Our History and Legacy

Established in 1965, Fort Portal College of Health Sciences (FPCOHES) is a government-founded, diploma-awarding health training institution located along Mugurusi Road, Buhinga, in Fort Portal Tourism City, Western Uganda.

Origins at the King’s Palace

Our journey began in 1965 at the King’s Palace, where the institution operated as the Fort Portal School of Medical Assistants under the Uganda Ministry of Health.

Relocation and Growth

In 1969, the school relocated to its current site adjacent to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, marking a significant step in its development and accessibility to clinical training.

Curriculum Renewal and Renaming

Following a curriculum renewal in 1984, the institution was renamed the Fort Portal School of Clinical Officers, reflecting its evolving academic scope and alignment with national health priorities.

Becoming a College

In 2019, the institution transitioned into Fort Portal College of Health Sciences, a name that reflects its broader mandate in health education and its commitment to excellence in training future health professionals.

Continuing the Legacy

Today, FPCOHES continues to build on its legacy of high-quality health training, producing graduates who serve across Uganda and beyond in diverse health and development roles.
